Have You Seen This Turtle?
The box turtle is one of the most recognized turtles in Arkansas. Of the 16 different species of turtles found in our state, only two are box turtles. (See Box Turtle Basics). Their name comes from their ability to completely close up inside their shell. Almost everyone can describe an encounter with a box turtle. Perhaps you helped one cross a road safely or found one in your backyard. A meeting with a box turtle usually leaves a pleasant memory – they’re appealing animals with colored shells and scales and animated facial features.
All types of turtles occupy noticeable places in Western culture (e.g., Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and a 1960s rock group), and Native American art often features turtles. These traits have earned the box turtle many human allies. Now the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission is inviting you to join in their efforts to learn more about the status of these little reptiles.
